Twenty years after Dan was born, Nancy Handwerker would join the family. The house was vacant in 1955 because Howard filed for bankruptcy. The house was given over to the control of his employer, to whom he owed the most money, Jim Welch of Welch Plywood.

The Presley family moved many times throughout the singer’s childhood, and he was able to finally put down roots in 1957 when he bought his legendary Memphis home. But even with his beloved Graceland as a home base, Presley added to his list of addresses, buying or renting homes in Germany, Palm Springs, and several neighborhoods in Los Angeles. From his humble beginnings in a two-room home in Tupelo, Mississippi, to a sprawling Wallace Neff–designed Bel Air mansion once home to Howard Hughes to the Jungle Room at Graceland, Elvis Presley spent his life in memorable surroundings. Since opening to the public in 1982, Graceland has welcomed over 20 million visitors, including Hollywood stars, best-selling music artists, heads of state, royalty, and of course, Elvis fans. But before it was open to the world’s visitors, it was home to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. In celebration of 65 years since Elvis purchased Graceland, and 40 years since it opened for public tours, this exhibit explores the story of Elvis’ Graceland through photos, personal artifacts, and Graceland Archival footage.

Originally a screened porch, the space was enclosed and given a Hawaiian-inspired design complete with a waterfall. Elvis bought this house at 1034 Audubon for his family in 1956 for $29,000. They lived there for just one year when Elvis bought Graceland due to an increasing need for privacy.

Your first stop inside Graceland Mansion will be the foyer where you can view Elvis' living room, dining room, the stairways, and his mother's bedroom. Here in the foyer was often where special guests were received and shown to the living room, where they would await Elvis to greet them. Elements of decor you see in these rooms today span all of the Elvis eras at Graceland, but the look is primarily the late 1960s to early 1970s incarnation.
